    Warning after vicious muggings

A SIXTY-six-year-old Dewsbury woman was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary with serious head injuries this week after being mugged in the street.                                                                      The woman was put on a life-support machine and now Dewsbury police are warning elderly women not to resist such attacks.                              "It's better to hand over your handbag and lose a few pounds than risk losing your life," said a police spokesman.                              He added: "Some of these ladies are very fragile and these cowards who attack them see them as easy targets. They know it doesn't take much to knock them to the ground."                              The attack on the woman, who lives on The Flatts, occurred as she was walking arm in arm with a male companion in Eightlands Road after an evening out.                                           Her attacker tried to grab her handbag and in the struggle both she and her friend were dragged to the ground and she struck her head.                              The attack was the third that day on women in Dewsbury and police believe the attackers were heroin addicts looking for their next fix.                       led t5 tube        Neighbours and friends of the woman concerned say her attacker was a "savage" preying on vulnerable women.                              Now they are calling for more police patrols in the area ? a call which is being backed by a local women's group who want to see more police on the beat.              led flexible                 A friend of the woman concerned said: "These people are savages and something has to be done about it.They are roaming the street and attacking defenceless old ladies. Even if it means doubling the number of police, we have to sort it out."                              Mrs Maureen Tierney, Chairman of Dewsbury and District Women's Health Group, said she had spoken to Dewsbury councillors some weeks ago about the growing number of attacks on women in Dewsbury.                                     "Women are not even safe in their own homes. They daren't go out during the day, let alone at night.                              "This poor lady obviously thought she was safe because she was accompanied by a man ? but she wasn't.                              "It's absolutely heart-breaking to listen to women who have been attacked in this way. It robs them of their dignity and their confidence. It doesn't only scar them physically but also mentally.                              "I know of a lot of elderly women who no longer take their
embroidered patches handbags out with them."                              Sgt Bob Porritt said these attacks were undoubtedly carried out by heroin addicts who were getting more and more desperate.                              Supt John Cocliff urged the public not to panic.                              "Dewsbury is a safe place and we need to put all this into perspective.                              "The biggest category for such street offences is males between 18 and 25 and we pursue vigorously all such incidents.                              "This kind of street attack is happening nationwide and Dewsbury has one of the lowest instances."                              The woman who was attacked has been transferred to Dewsbury District Hospital and last night her condition was described as satisfactory.                              Police are looking to trace a man who helped the victim on the ground. He is described as white, about 5ft 7in, smartly-dressed and well spoken.
